The plastic strip is bio-degradable and is simply a protective strip to prevent the shingles from sticking to each other in packaging.

Do I need to install an additional protection under the shingles?

On a roof with a slope of 4:12 or greater we install an ice and water barrier across the bottom edge of the roof that extends a minimum of 12 inches past the inside of the exterior wall of the house (normally Approx. 3 feet). The purpose is to prevent melting ice dams from leaking back under the shingles and into the house.

We strongly recommend that one layer of either #15 Felt roofing paper or a higher quality Synthetic roofing underlayment be installed on the entire remainder of the roof deck to help extend the life of the roof deck and shingles

A roof with a slope under 4:12 is required to have 2 rows of ice and water shield installed at the eave and 2 layers of underlayment throughout the remainder of the roof.

We also install an ice and water barrier in the valleys.

What is the difference between fibreglass and organic shingles?

Both shingles look very similar when you open up a bundle, but the difference is in the underlying mat. Organic shingles are built on a heave paper-like base, while fibreglass shingles have non-woven glass fibres at their core. This results in better heat resistance and they are less likely to curl at the edges.

What is the difference between Enviroshake and a Cedar Roof?

Traditionally cedar was used as a roofing material because it was a readily available resource and the options for building materials were limited. The look of a cedar roof is certainly very attractive but unfortunately it does not last. In as little as 15 years, cedar can rot, crack, warp and start to spoil the look of your home. To prevent this, regular maintenance is required to keep your roof looking good. Enviroshake leads the revolution with authentic good looks, no maintenance and a 50 year warranty.
