About Asphalt Shingles

Currently, asphalt shingles are the most popular type of roof material for a variety of reasons: they are relatively inexpensive and are available in many styles, shapes and colours. They require low maintenance and are easy to repair. Asphalt shingles are protected with manufacturers’ warranty periods ranging from 20 years to lifetime. Because it is known for durability, roof shingles have been around for over 100 years.

Roof shingles come in two (2) types:

1. Organic
1. Softer and easier to work
2. Contain more asphalt and nearly always use heavier weight reinforcement
3. Absorb roof stresses better and more tear resistant
4. Typically has thick layer capable of hiding minor imperfections in the roof deck or the old layer of shingles
2. Fibreglass
1. Harder and more resistant to heat, blisters and curling
2. Has higher fire resistance
3. Contains ceramic granules to protect the shingles from the sun’s UV rays and to serve as aesthetics to provide wide variety of colors
